Travel Articles – Australian Beaches

By: Garry Tomlin

Dedicated to those hardy soles that venture into the seas that surround our coastline.

Australia has by reputation some of if not the best beaches in the world with beaches as long as 90 miles and even longer in some areas.

Starting at the Northern end of the country we have beaches that are a mixture of mud mixed with oysters shells and many young Mangrove trees trying to re capture the shoreline. Not an area recommended for sun bathing or swimming.

Crocodiles being a common site in these areas, it is wiser just to throw a bucket of water over yourself and let it go at that.

Other nasty critters are the Box jellyfish, Stonefish, Crown of thorns starfish and one deadly new jellyfish the size of a pinhead that kills anything including humans.

Not to mention man eating sharks that are common in close to shore but the Crocodiles are more feared then the sharks as they can run as fast as a galloping horse should you be chased by one on shore.

Moving south of the continent to ¾ of the way down the beaches start to come to look like the beaches we all love. Nice clean yellow to whitish sands of fine texture that is pleasant to spread yourself out on to get a sun tan.

Water temperature is always around 22 c and higher, even during the cooler months that only last a few weeks.

Surfing is not the greatest as there is many coral reefs out from shore and coral islands that take the break the surf down long before it has a chance to reach the shoreline but saying that you if you wait long enough you do pick up a odd wave that is strong enough to ride to shore.

Further down the coast from just above the Frazer Island you start to get a much better surf conditions with rolling waves but still not as great as those in the Mooloolaba region and Maroochydore.

It is far better to drive further south still until you reach Manly and Bondi beaches, there you start to see the famous waves and dangerous dumpers associated with these that makes surfing here so great for locals an visitors.

The ocean being a little cooler then up north but still the waters are clear and unpolluted making it one of the rare areas of this planet that is safe to swim in.

Coming down towards the end of this huge continent we have glorious beaches of up to 90 miles in length. Once again all the sand is fine and yellowish not strewn with rocks and pebbles as found in beaches outside Australia.

My recommendation is for anyone keen on surfing, diving and swimming to come on down and see for yourself what you are missing, you want be disappointed!
